The Kelly’s Flowers Story

Kelly's Flowers has quite the history:

The business was founded by Terry & Delta O'Hara at 61 Gore Street, in the old Sheriff's House.

The business was then sold to Peggy & Brian Paul. The Paul's sold Kelly's to Cathy McCabe in 2002.

Then in 2007, Kelly's moved from 61 Gore Street to 63 Gore Street in the Thomas Wright building.

In 2011, Cathy sold the business to Pascale Mapleston. Pascal decided to move Kelly's to the Code's Mill building in 2014.

That same year, Krista bought Kelly's Flowers from Pascal. Kelly's has been in the Code's Mill building ever since, that is, until this year.

Krista & Mike got the opportunity to purchase the Thomas Wright building from Cathy Hay, in 2024. Which will now be the new home of Kelly's Flowers (again 😉 )

Roses; Beautiful and Timeless

Roses

Have you ever wondered why the rose is such a popular Valentine’s Day flower? As it turns out, there are many reasons why the rose is a popular choice come February 14th.

Our favorite reason dates back to the Victorian era when flowers were used to send messages to love interests; a form of communication called, floriography. Roses symbolize love all on their own, however, the colour you choose communicates different meanings. Of course, we all know red roses represent passion. Take a look at what other colours represent; pink stands for appreciation and grace, yellow conveys friendship and happiness, and white implies innocence. Whatever you’re trying to communicate this Valentine’s Day, the rose remains the most timeless choice.

Valentine’s Day is Coming Up!

Valentine's Day Flowers

Of course, we have to remind you that Valentine’s Day is right around the corner.; Wednesday, February 14th,(in case you’ve forgotten). If you are looking to impress your loved one, we can help with that. We always have the best selection of roses and many other varieties of fresh flowers to signify and represent your love for that special someone.

Caring for your Poinsettia this Christmas

How to Keep Your Poinsettias Looking Good

Poinsettias, with their vibrant red leaves, are a festive symbol of the holiday season. However, keeping them looking their best can be a challenge. Here are some tips to help you maintain the beauty of your poinsettia plants.

1. Choose a Sunny Spot

Poinsettias are native to warm climates, such as Mexico and South America. They thrive in sunny locations where they can soak up the warmth and light they are accustomed to in their natural habitat. Find a spot in your home where the plant can receive ample sunlight without being exposed to cold drafts or extreme temperature fluctuations.

2. Avoid Over-watering and Under-watering

One of the most common mistakes in poinsettia care is improper watering. Both over-watering and under-watering can be detrimental to these sensitive plants.

The Ice Cube Method

A simple and effective way to water your poinsettia is by using the ice cube method:

  • Place 4 ice cubes on top of the soil.
  • Let the ice cubes melt gradually. This provides a slow, steady supply of water that the roots can absorb efficiently.
  • After the ice has melted, check the soil moisture. Insert your finger into the soil up to the first knuckle. The soil should feel moist about a third of the way down.
  • If the soil still feels dry, add one more ice cube, let it melt, and check again.

This method helps to ensure that the plant receives water at a rate that mimics natural absorption, reducing the risk of over-watering or under-watering.

By following these simple steps, you can keep your poinsettias looking vibrant and healthy throughout the holiday season and beyond. Remember, a little care goes a long way in preserving the beauty of these festive plants.
